Hosting a baby shower in the UK? Learn how to manage setup, welcome guests, run games, organise gift-opening and handle unexpected situations for a smooth celebration.
Hosting a baby shower is a different job to planning one. The planning happens over weeks; hosting happens over a few hours, and it's mostly about setting up smoothly, keeping the room comfortable, and making sure the mum-to-be doesn't have to think about logistics at all on the day.
Here's how to run the day itself, once all the planning is already done.
Aim to have the venue fully set up at least 30–45 minutes before the first guest arrives — decorations up, food laid out or ready to bring out, seating sorted, and any games set up and ready to go. Rushing the setup while early guests watch tends to set a slightly frazzled tone for the whole event.
If you're hosting in a hired space rather than at home, check what time you have access from, and build your setup window around that rather than the shower's official start time.
As host, your main job in the first 20–30 minutes is simply making sure guests feel comfortable — pointing them to drinks, introducing people who don't know each other, and keeping the mum-to-be from feeling like she has to entertain everyone herself. A short welcome once most guests have arrived (even just a sentence or two) is a natural way to signal the shower is properly underway.
The trick to hosting games well is momentum — explain the rules quickly, keep instructions short, and don't wait too long for stragglers before starting. If a game is falling flat, it's fine to wrap it up early rather than dragging it out. Two well-paced games beat three that overstay their welcome.
It also helps to have someone other than the mum-to-be leading games, so she can simply enjoy being the centre of attention rather than running the room.
Gift-opening tends to take longer than hosts expect, so build in more time than feels necessary — 30 minutes for a shower of 20+ guests isn't unusual. As host, it helps to:
A few things come up often enough to plan for:
Close the shower with a short toast or thank-you from either the host or the mum-to-be, then allow time for photos before guests start leaving. A clear "official" end point — cutting a cake, a final toast — makes it easier for guests to know when it's a natural time to say their goodbyes.
Hosting somewhere that's already set up and ready to go helps on the day itself — see Crown Banqueting Suite's baby shower venue in Ilford.
